Questions parents
usually ask us.

We've put together the questions that come up most often. If yours isn't here, just email us at info@acltutors.com β€” we reply the same day, Monday to Saturday.

Getting Started

What happens before you commit to anything.

We don't ask you to figure that out yourself. Fill in the enquiry form and we'll have a short conversation first β€” looking at the subject, the gap between current and target grade, and how your child tends to learn. We'll say what we'd recommend and explain why. No pressure to commit after that call.
The first session is a free consultation β€” no charge, no obligation. The tutor will go through a few questions with your child, look at any recent test results if you have them, and identify the key areas to focus on. By the end, both of you will have a clear picture of where things stand and what the plan is going forward.
No. We don't have minimum commitments or lock-in contracts. Some families come for a focused block of 6–8 sessions before exams, others stay with us for a full academic year. You book as you go β€” start when you're ready, stop when you don't need us anymore.
Usually within 48 hours of getting in touch. We'll reply within 24 hours, have a quick call, and if everything looks right we can often schedule a first session for that same week. We don't have a waiting list for most subjects.

Sessions & Scheduling

How the practical side works.

Standard sessions are 60 minutes. For A-Level students, 90 minutes is often more effective given the depth of content β€” we can discuss the right format when we speak. Exam intensive blocks can be longer depending on what's needed.
We run sessions in the evenings (from 4pm) and throughout the weekend. We work around your family's schedule β€” tell us what times work and we'll do our best to match them.
We ask for 24 hours' notice where possible so we can offer the slot to another student. Missed sessions can usually be rescheduled within the same week. We don't have a punishing cancellation policy β€” life gets complicated and we understand that.
Yes β€” half-terms and the summer are actually our busiest periods. They're the best time to close gaps before the next set of exams. We run the same session structure throughout the year, including intensive revision blocks in the weeks before May exams.
Yes. Continuity matters β€” a tutor who knows where your child is makes for a much more effective session than starting fresh each time. We assign a consistent tutor from the start, and if anything changes we'll tell you in advance.

Results & Progress

What to expect and how we track it.

Confidence tends to shift within the first 3–4 sessions β€” students start approaching problems differently and asking better questions in class. Grade improvement typically shows within a half-term of consistent sessions. We'll be honest with you if we think a particular situation is going to take longer.
You'll get a short update after every single session β€” what was covered, what's sticking, what needs more work. You won't need to chase us. For one-to-one students we also do a more detailed progress review every four weeks so you always have a clear picture of where things stand.
We'll tell you. If progress is slower than it should be, we'll flag it and talk through why β€” whether that's attendance, engagement, a particularly difficult topic, or something we need to adjust in our approach. We don't keep taking sessions and stay quiet about a problem. If something isn't working, we'd rather have that conversation early.

Subjects & Exam Boards

What we cover and how we cover it.

We cover AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC across our main subjects. Cambridge IGCSE is available for some. See the full breakdown on our subjects page. If your child is on a board not listed, drop us a message before assuming we can't help β€” we'll check and tell you honestly.
Possibly. Get in touch and tell us the subject, level, and board. We'll confirm whether we can help within 24 hours. We'd rather you ask and find out than assume we can't.
Always to the specific board. The same topic can be assessed very differently depending on whether it's AQA or Edexcel β€” question phrasing, marking priorities, required depth of answer. We teach to what your child's board actually rewards, not a generic version of the syllabus.

Pricing & Payment

How the financial side works.

We share pricing directly when you get in touch β€” rates vary slightly by subject, level, and session format. We keep things straightforward with no hidden extras. Contact us and we'll confirm everything upfront before you commit to anything.
Yes. The first session is a free consultation β€” no charge, no commitment. We use it to understand your child's situation properly before recommending anything. You only pay for sessions once you've decided you want to continue.
We'll confirm payment details when we speak. We typically invoice in advance for a block of sessions, or weekly depending on preference. Bank transfer is the standard method. No payment is taken without your explicit agreement on pricing first.

Online vs In-Person

Which format works and when.

For most students, yes. We use an interactive whiteboard for online sessions which makes working through problems β€” including Maths, Sciences and essay marking β€” just as straightforward as being in the same room. The main exception is students who find it harder to focus without someone physically present. We'll tell you honestly which format we think would suit your child.
A laptop or tablet with a stable internet connection and a camera. A microphone is needed β€” either built-in or a headset. A second screen is helpful for Maths and Sciences but not essential. We'll send setup instructions before the first session so nothing is left to figure out on the day.
We cover Ilford, Wanstead, Stratford, Leyton, Leytonstone and surrounding areas in East London. If you're not sure whether you're in range, mention your area when you enquire and we'll confirm. Online is always available as an alternative regardless of location.

Still have a question?
Just ask.

We reply within 24 hours, Monday to Saturday. No question is too small β€” if you're on the fence about whether to enquire, that's exactly the situation our free consultation is designed for.
